A cracken comedy festival
March 2011 is going to be a laugh and a half. Why? Because the Herald Sun has been named as the official media partner for the 2011 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Securing the month-long event - which will celebrate its 25th birthday next year and be headlined by big names including Arj Barker and Wil Anderson - is a coup for HWT's events & partnerships team.

The festival attracts more than 500,000 fans each year making it one of the world's biggest comedy events. And, until now, the media partnership had resided with The Age.

As was reported in The Australian on December 8: "The 25-year-old event has had a long association with (The Age) and cultural elites in Melbourne. But yesterday that, too, ended."

Herald Sun editor Simon Pristel said the partnership reinforced the Herald Sun as Victoria's best source of arts and entertainment news.

"Our broad audience has already proven its worth for festival organisers, with readers leaping into action when we announced the deal last week," he said.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival marketing director Peter Wood reported that "gala sales went through the roof this morning."

"The great coverage supported the Festival's below the line activity steering it towards a record sales day" he said.

The Herald Sun boasts an impressive array of entertainment sections including Hit, Weekend, Play and our daily arts and entertainment pages.

Bite Two
Sacred editorial space unlocked for advertising
Many Herald Sun pages have long been reserved for editorial only.

But this is all about to change.

Using our online reader panel, we recently asked Herald Sun readers which opinion and amusement pages they enjoyed most.

Results show our reader opinion page Your Say (as pictured) is the clear standout with around 70 per cent of respondents reading it on any given day; Andrew Bolt is by far our most popular columnist and the horoscopes and quiz pages are where readers are at their most engaged.

Other hot spots with an above-average engagement score* include Tuesday's SuperQuiz, the Sunday Herald Sun pets page, In Black & White and Hamish Blake's column which appears once a month on a Saturday.

That's why we've decided to open up this previously untapped space to you. We are now designing a series of smaller space advertising sizes on high-engagement Herald Sun pages.

Intralot is the first to try the new environment appearing on the horoscopes page.

Please contact your account manager to find out more.

Rain, hail or shine it's online
Summer is fast approaching but it's not the only thing heating up. Our new-look heraldsun.com.au weather page is also shining bright.

The vertical includes comprehensive up-to-the minute weather, seven day forecasts, umbrella, UV, pollen and hair frizz indexes. Historical averages and 'On This Day' records, radar, satellite and synoptic charts, cyclone alerts and world weather are also available.

A local page where visitors type in their postcode for weather updates plus a My Weather favourites system that tracks multiple locations at a glance are also new to the site.

Visitation to this part of the website peaks over the summer period making the coming months an ideal time to advertise.

Bite Last
Elite world cycling partnership
The Herald Sun was the proud print media partner for the
77th UCI Road World Championships recently held in Victoria.

Second only to the Tour de France in terms of prestige, the event brought over 400 of the world's best riders to Australia for the five-day cycling contest.

In a letter to the Herald Sun, Melbourne 2010 Organising Committee general magazine Michael Palmer wrote: "I would like to thank you personally for your contribution to making the 2010 UCI Road World Championships the best of its kind anywhere in the world. It will be remembered for many firsts including first time in the southern hemisphere."

With the Herald Sun's assistance in driving mass awareness, the event was able to attract over 293,000 spectators and "(achieve) our goal of delivering an event that took everyone by surprise".
